I came to be in ’63 on an archipelago called Fiji. My parents chose to move in ’72 when the political winds blew an adverse course, so I grew up in Canada. It certainly was advantageous that I was already fluent in English.
I have always loved to read and write; sharing this love with others has become my passion, and it permeates my professional and personal life. I believe that the process of teaching is inextricably and reciprocally entwined with the process of learning. I learned this concept during my first year of teaching, and I have spent 35 years practising and mastering it. More recently, I have come to embrace the joys of online tutoring.
Inasmuch as enlightenment can come from the answers we seek, wisdom is most evident in the questions we pose. Exhilarated, gratified, and humbled are a few words that describe how I feel when understanding dawns in a student’s eyes. I become weak-kneed, and my first thought is now the work can begin!
I believe teaching is an act of service, and learning is an act of gratitude. The reciprocity that is teaching and learning has allowed me not only to be a better educator but also a better human being. An observation made by educator Rabindranth Tagore always strikes a resonant chord within me: “I slept and dreamt life was joy. I awoke and found life was service. I acted and, behold, service was joy".
